Author Talk with Meg Mundell
In August 2018, a group of strangers met in inner-city Melbourne for a series of creative writing workshops. Everyone in the room had experienced some form of homelessness – whether sleeping rough, staying in crisis accommodation, couch-surfing with friends, or living in a boarding house or caravan park. Each week the writers came together and put pen to paper, sharing their original and heartfelt stories of “place”. Word spread fast, and the project snowballed.
One year after the workshops began, a book was born. We Are Here: Stories of Home, Place and Belonging (Affirm Press, October 2019) is a world-first collection of true stories by people who have experienced homelessness.
Editor and project manager Meg Mundell will talk about this passion project, the writers who took part, and their powerful stories – and how “We Are Here” sets out to shatter stereotypes, spark new conversations and amplify the diverse voices of a talented and often overlooked group of Australians.
