HAZELWOOD

HAZELWOOD
In 2020, Engie, owners of Hazelwood Power Station and Mine, donated an 8 metre painting to Latrobe Regional Gallery. The painting from 1994, depicts the history of Hazelwood Power Station from farmland to its heyday and its imagined future at the time.
The painting by Jenardiy Arkadi Zabenko, is a valuable record of a now lost icon of the Latrobe Valley. The painting in agit-prop realist style includes images of well-known local identities and workers of the time.
The artwork has a fascinating back story, as it was painted by the artist when he was a prisoner at H.M. Prison Morwell River which closed in 1997.
The exhibition also features three paintings by Kerrie Warren which were commissioned by Hazelwood Power Station in 1998. Historical material is also included in the exhibition with the kind assistance of the Morwell Historical Society, PowerWorks and members of the community.
